Kim's Dog Coaching - Obedience and Agility Training to strengthen your bond with your dog

Strengthen the bond between you and your dog

Competition Obedience

What is Competition Obedience?

Obedience is one of the AKC's oldest sporting events, developed in the 1930s. According to the AKC, "from walking and on and off leash to retrieving and jumping, or demonstrating your dog’s ability to stay, Obedience trained dogs are well behaved at home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs." UKC is another organization that has trials in obedience.

Whether or not you want to compete, every dog owner should consider some form higher of obedience training. It’s the best way to establish good communication skills between you and your dog – and to make sure that your dog is the most well-behaved one in your neighborhood!

Novice, Open and Utility classes are offered for the individuals who would like to train their dogs for obedience competition.  Many students start the road to competition obedience by taking a couple of basic level classes, then so appreciate the bond shared with their dogs that they move into competition level training!

Our obedience classes focus on learning the individual behaviors that the exercises use and then putting those behaviors together while learning how to perform each exercise. AKC Obedience is the primary venue we address, although you can easily do other venues using the information taught at our classes.

There are several Obedience organizations that sanction obedience trials, and these trials are held by obedience/rally clubs. The organizations that are predominant in the Chicago area include:

AKC Obedience - American Kennel Club

UKC Obedience

Each of these organizations has their own rules and regulations for obedience trials and all allow any breed of dog (including mixed breeds) to compete.

For more detailed information on rally, check out- Dog Obedience on Wikipedia

“Kim- Thank you. Your class was great. Oscar and I learned a lot. Since Oscar is my 3rd dog, I've had experience with other classes. What was wonderful and different about yours was that you taught us and encouraged us to have fun with our dogs; also you focused on our relationship with our dog and helped us appreciate how special that is. We hope to be back for the next class.”-Cynthia
